But I guess the heart wants what it wants and they were meant to heal each other. It also breaks my heart that they had to be away from each other for so long. ![]() ![]() I can see labor strikes happening, but the book definitely attributed that to the communist party. First of all, Hannah's writing is so evocative - you can feel the dust in your throat and the sun. Overall I really enjoyed this book and would give it a 4/5. I don't know if that was the author's intent. The Four Winds is an indelible portrait of America and the American Dream, as seen through the eyes of one indomitable woman whose courage and sacrifice will come to define a generation. Now, whether the communist party was active in California during this time period, I honestly can't say, but I felt that communism and the current democratic party were synonymous, as were the capitalists/republicans. They were nothing short of "slave owners." They were portrayed as prejudiced against the poor, were all dressed nicely and used body language to show disdain and contempt for the migrants. The "capitalists" were not helpful at all. The communists were the good guys, who provided tangible help to the migrants by way of food and housing when the migrant camp was flooded. In the book, it mentioned communism as the precursor to organized labor unions. I can forgive this apparent conflict though - because the writing in Chapter 10, after Elsa read the letter from Rafe is phenomenal. The co …more Great question! I found the first mention of it rather jarring. 'The Four Winds' is completely deserving of this year's Book of the Year award because it's a brilliant and emotional story of heroism and pursuit of the American Dream, with timely messages. ![]() In the book, it mentioned communism as the precursor to organized labor unions.
